Love Your Locks

Your hair is the frame for the portrait of your face. Even if you’re having skin trouble, or have gained a bit of weight, or had to run out without a stitch of makeup on, having good hair can help. If your hair is good, nobody will notice anything else. A good hair day can inspire confidence, catch someone’s eye, and give you the oomph you need to get through a hard day. Here are my tips for keeping your hair healthy, shiny, and strong from root to ends.

Good hair starts in the shower, choose a shampoo and conditioner for your hair type:

  • Dry Hair – use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, try one with shea butter
  • Oily Hair – since most oily hair is also lifeless try a volumizing formula, you want something super lightweight so that is doesn’t add oil to your hair
  • Damaged Hair – damaged hair needs gentle treatment and intense healing, try something with argan (oil or extract)
  • Colored/Highlighted Hair – you should only use shampoo for color treated hair, I find that the prestige brands are much better than drugstore ones, try Fekkai if you don’t want anything too expensive
  • Dull Hair – shine enhancing shampoos are best for dull hair, I suggest using ones with olive oil
  • Gunky Hair – sometimes hair gets gross and gummy, when this happens you need a clarifying shampoo, the best ones use either apple cider vinegar or Tetrasodium EDTA
  • Normal Hair – you’re lucky if your hair is normal and healthy, use a gentle daily shampoo with ingredients like seaweed or coconut

Other than shampoo and conditioner your hair needs products that nourish and protect it. Here is a list of some of the products I use and the various tips and tricks for getting the most out of your hair:

  • use a weekly mask or treatment, you can buy a mask specifically for your hair type or use olive or almond oil to coat your hair for 20 minutes
  • if you blowdry or heat style your hair use a heat protectant
  • get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks if your hair is damaged, 6 months if not
  • don’t wash your hair every day, aim for every other and work up to every third day, you want to keep your scalps natural oils intact for as long as possible, use dry shampoo if you need to refresh
  • take a Biotin supplement daily, it promotes healthy hair, skin and nails
  • use a natural bristle brush, if you can save up for a Mason Pearson brush it’s totally worth it, otherwise look for boar bristles
  • never use a brush on wet hair, only a comb in order to avoid breakage
  • end your shower with a burst of cold water, this will seal the cuticle and make your hair shiny
