Love The Skin You’re In

Skincare. On the surface caring for your skin is easy, however once you get into it skin care can quickly become overwhelmingly complicated. There are creams for everything under the sun, far too many methods of exfoliating, and an endless variety of cleansing oils/fluids/foams/creams…you get the picture. So how do we know what will work for us? What do we need, and what can we skip? Here are the BASICS of a skincare routine that everyone can and should follow:

1. Cleanser
Your cleanser should be strong enough to remove your makeup, but gentle enough not to cause any irritation. You’ll know you’ve found the right cleanser when your skin looks fresh and feels clean but not tight. You should consider your skin type when selecting cleansers – what works for your friends may not work for you. If your skin is dry try a milky cream cleanser, if it’s oily opt for a gel formula, if you have combination skin (like me!) I’d suggest a liquid/fluid gel formula. If acne is a major problem for you get a regime from your Dermotologist. Trust me, skincare is one area where paying a little bit more money can make a huge difference. That being said, you don’t have to break the bank. Try these options –
Dry skin: Philosophy Purity Made Simple
Oily skin: Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Oily Skin Formula
Combination skin: Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser
Acne Prone skin: Obagi Clenziderm

2. Toner
Toner is a cleansing product that has been out of vogue for a while now, but recently it’s becoming more popular. I’ve used it since I was 12 and truly believe it is the reason why I’ve always been complimented on my radiant skin. Well, toner and good genes- thank you Mom! If toner has not been part of your regimen ADD IT NOW! You won’t regret it. It adds an extra clean feeling and can do everything from balancing skin to refining its texture. Finally, many people may disagree with me here but don’t be afraid to use a toner that contains alcohol if your skin is on the oilier side. Now you should not be able to smell the alcohol, but it’s quite effective in small doses. Here are some of my favorites:
Dry skin: L’Occitane Shea Butter Gentle Toner
Oily skin: Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3
Combination skin: Orgins United State Balancing Toner
Acne Prone skin: Obagi Clenziderm
Hypersensitive skin: Fresh Rose Floral Toner

3. Moisturizer
The third and final step of your basic skincare routine is moisturizer. This step is possibly the most important of them all, as it replenishes and rehydrates your skin. Even if you have oily skin, you cannot afford to skip moisturizing. Try these, and experience wonderful soothing hydration:
Dry skin: Kiehl’s Abyssine Cream
Oily skin: The Body Shop Vitamin C Moisturizer SPF 15
Combination skin: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel
Acne Prone skin: Obagi Clenziderm Therapeutic Lotion

And there you have it- a basic skincare routine that is affordable and easy to follow. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite basic skincare products are and why!
